Divya Desam: Thondai Nadu

The formative ground of the Sri Vaishnava tradition.

The Thondai Nadu region, encompassing northern Tamil Nadu, is home to 22 of the 108 Divya Desams. Defined by ancient Pallava architecture and deep spiritual heritage, this region served as a foundational center for the Sri Vaishnava tradition — it is the birthplace of the Mudal Alwars (the first three Alwars: Poigai, Bhoothath, and Pey Alvar), and the formative ground for the revered guru Sri Ramanujacharya.

The temples here were primarily constructed and expanded by the Pallava and later Chola dynasties — hallmarks of early Dravidian architecture, featuring intricate rock-cut elements, towering gopurams, and elaborate pillared halls.

Rare and unique features of this circuit.

• I.
  Multi-Shrine Complexes. The Ulagalantha Perumal temple in Kanchipuram uniquely houses four distinct Divya Desams within a single precinct.

  Intra-faith Proximity. A rare feature here is the placement of Vaishnava shrines within major Shaivite or Shakta complexes — such as Nilathingal Thundam inside the Ekambareswarar Temple, and Thirukalvanoor inside the Kamakshi Amman Temple.

  Iconic Postures. Rare, imposing depictions of Lord Vishnu — the massive Trivikrama form at Ulagalantha Perumal and the hilltop seated Yoga Narasimha at Sholingur.
